of the parish of st. mary the virgin

in great warley.

Great Warley is a small, green belt, rural community.  Fewer people work on the land these days and it has no new houses. After an interregnum of more than ten  years the parishes of Christ Church, Warley and St. Mary's of Great Warley have now been united in a new benefice and not only do we now share in the care of the vicar, the Revd. Chris Goldsmith, but also that of the new curate.   They conduct  a  broad range of services    with the help of our local readers . Visitors are most welcome to these services and indeed often attend   the sung Eucharist or Matins at 11.00am. Others enjoy the surrounding gardens as well as the church before it is locked at 12.30 pm.

We are, of course,    first and foremost, a living church. But  we also love to share the beauty of its unique Art Nouveau interior with many visitors on most Bank Holiday Monday afternoons. Throughout the year, too,   many groups and societies from all over the country and abroad make specially arranged visits.

Such examples of early twentieth century art and architecture are rare and popular, so that this Grade I listed church has attracted generous support from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund.   Nevertheless, our small but devoted congregation and friends strive to conserve it (without alteration or  'improvement ') for the future worship of God, remembering  our benefactor Evelyn Heseltine's strong Anglicanism, extreme   generosity and artistic courage. His inspiration included exhibiting the beauty of nature within this building as well as without.

Just recently   two lancet windows in the nave which   were destroyed during the last war have been replaced. Mrs. Janet Miller,  our    retired reader    raised the necessary funding and   researched   the original designs  that have been reproduced in stained glass..

We hope that you will enjoy browsing through our pages and that they will inspire you to visit us and include our church in your pilgrimage .Future Open Days will be announced on this site. Better still, we would love to welcome you at one of our services (see Services this month.)

With best wishes and God's Blessing ,

Peter Proud and Helen Burgess, churchwardens.
